Preparation: Gather pictures of a few different temples and a church building. Have a set of scriptures. Gather ten dimes and ten pennies and a dollar. Print the activity sheet to color. Print the talk from the Friend. *Optional- have tithing slip on hand to fill out for practice. 

Objective: To teach about tithing, what it is and how it is used. Why we pay it.


Gathering Activity:  Hold up the pictures of the temples and the church ask what they are, and how they came to be built and explain that they are built with our tithing money. 

Lesson: Hold up the dollar explain that Heavenly Father does not ask for all of our money, he only asks for part of it- 10%. Demonstrate how 10 dimes equal one dollar and how ten pennies equal one dime.  Show that one dime is all that Heavenly Father asks for or one penny out of 10. Remind that this money is used to help the church all around the world.

Conclusion: Bear testimony about tithing and what it is used for.

The Beatitudes

3 Nephi 12-17

This week I thought I would put down some thoughts about the Beatitudes. I will be drawing some from my own thoughts and some from an article "The Beatitudes: Pattern For Coming Unto Christ" in the December, 1987 Ensign .

• Yea, blessed are the poor in spirit who come unto me, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven

Elder Robert E. Wells wrote an article in the Ensign and in it he linked this attitude with the scripture in Mosiah chapter 3 verse 19. He said, "One of the most powerful scriptures on this attitude is from Mosiah 3:19,where King Benjamin declares that a person must become “a saint through the atonement of Christ the Lord, and becometh as a child,submissive, meek, humble, patient, full of love, willing to submit to all things which the Lord seeth fit to inflict upon him, even as a child doth submit to his father.”

• And again, blessed are all they that mourn, for they shall be comforted.

I think that this is an important thing because to mourn means that we have loved. When we are mourning we can then turn to our Savior and receive comfort through the Holy Ghost. I think that as we do this we can develop a better relationship with Heavenly Father and His son.

• And blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.

One of the main things I think about is a lesson I had in an institute class talked about the difference in perception of the word "meek". In Webster's 1828 dictionary he defined meek as: Mild of temper; soft; gentle; not easily provoked or irritated; yielding; given to forbearance under injuries.

Part of the current definition includes: deficient in spirit and courage. I don't think that the original meaning of the word describes anything as deficient. It actually sounds very strong.

• And blessed are all they who do hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be filled with the Holy Ghost.

 Elder Wells points out that the Joseph Smith translation and the Book of Mormon end this attitude with "the Holy Ghost". He continues,"The highest blessings of the gospel are not for the fainthearted, coolly rational, theoretical philosopher, nor for the intellectually curious. Those blessings are for those stouthearted souls who hunger and thirst for greater personal righteousness. One need not have reached spiritual perfection or sainthood to receive the blessings promised in this Beatitude. If we develop a sincere hunger and thirst, the door to higher stairs will be opened, and we can then climb them."

• And blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.

 Elder Wells said this best,"The principle here is that we will be judged with the same measure that we apply to others."

He also said,"we should show mercy to others because of our unlimited and unconditional love for them. Our Savior, Jesus Christ, loves us—not because we deserve it, but because we are his brothers and sisters and he has sacrificed for us. Our parents love us—not because we deserve it, but because they have sacrificed for us."

• And blessed are all the pure in heart, for they shall see God.

 Elder Wells had a really interesting point on what it means to be pure in heart. He said, "Limpios, the Spanish term for “pure in heart,” is translated “clean ofheart.” It refers to ceremonial cleanliness, such as the emotions felt after baptism or temple ordinances. Other interpretations refer to being clean of guilt, clean of bad habits, and clean of pollution." I thought this was a really cool point. I have often heard the other definitions or to have clean thoughts. It seems to me that part of of the definition is to be baptized.

• And blessed are all the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God.

We know that contention is not from the Savior. In order to be more like him we need to seek peace with those around us. We need to not contribute to contentious situations if we want to have the Spirit with us.

• And blessed are all they who are persecuted for my name’s sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

One of the main things that jumps out to me on this is what has been happening in our world today to the Christians in the Middle East and in Africa. It is horrifying to think about how they are being treated and it breaks my heart. I have wondered at times if I would have the courage to stay strong in my convictions if faced with such circumstances. Reading this attitude is a good reminder of what we are working toward. Even if we are persecuted unto death over our faith in the Savior Heavenly Father will make it right. 

• Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake; Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.

I think it is neat that the Savior makes it personal here. He already said what the reward would be for those that are persecuted, but he took a moment to make sure that everyone understands that it applies to each of us personally, not just other people.

Putting It All Together

I wanted to write another post this week about something that stood out to me at the gathering this week.  I have read through the chapters on Samuel the Lamanite many times in my life now and the lead student (student teacher) made a great point about what Samuel was there to teach the Nephites that I thought I would write my thoughts about it.

Samuel was called to teach the Nephites about 4 main things and those things were:

1. For the Nephites to know the judgment of God. 

2. The conditions of repentance. 

3. About the coming of the Savior. 

4. The signs of the coming of the Savior. 

As I have been reading through the Book of Mormon this time I have time and again been struck by how truly the scriptures are written for our day.  The Nephites were a chosen people who had access to all of the teachings of the Gospel.  I am touched that Heavenly Father is so willing to give people one more chance to make the right choice!  Samuel was there so that there would be no question for the Nephites what they needed to do before being destroyed. Samuel let the Nephites know that they needed to repent or be destroyed.  

Heavenly Father then instructed Samuel to let the Nephites know what repentance is and how to do it.  He didn't just say "Tell them to repent or be destroyed." He said, "You need to repent and this is how to do it." I think there are many times in our lives that the Spirit will instruct us on what we need to do if we will listen.  

I think that it was so important that Samuel was instructed to teach about the coming of the Savior. Our goal is to return to live with Heavenly Father and the Savior is the way that it is possible. I think that those that showed the faith to repent before the Atonement happened are so amazing!  I am so grateful for the hope that the gospel gives us, they had the promise that a Savior was coming! 

And last Samuel needed to instruct the Nephites on what the signs were.  It was very important for them to recognize the Savior, it is important for all of us. We, like the Nephites have been given signs of what it will be like when the Savior returns.  If we are faithful and watchful then we will know Him when He comes. I think it was important for them to know the signs because it gives hope and some kind of structure for what we are to be watching for. 

I think that what Samuel taught the Nephites is just as important for us today.  We need to be living the gospel, repenting and watching for the Savior to come again.  I worry as I watch the news that we are getting dangerously close to the kind of wickedness that will require the same judgement the Nephites were facing. When that happens I try to focus on what I need to be doing every day, and I try to take peace that if I am living the gospel I do not need to be worried. This is a good reminder of what I need to do better.

This week I am putting together this blog entry because my thoughts have been too jumbled to really put them into a talk or other presentation.  I will try to be clear and maybe putting them down here will help me to organize them better. 

This week as we have been studying through the chapters on Moroni, I have been blown away by some of the parallels I have been witnessing in society today.  As I have gotten older I have worked to be more informed about the happenings in the world, but what has also happened as a result is my growing frustration about my powerlessness to fix many of the terrible things going on.  

I was especially touched by quote from President Gordon B. Hinckley in his talk titled "War and Peace" he said ,"..there are times and circumstances when nations are justified, in fact have an obligation, to fight for family, for liberty, and against tyranny, threat, and oppression." He went on to say ,"This places us in the position of those who long for peace, who teach peace, who work for peace, but who also are citizens of nations and are subject to the laws of our governments. Furthermore, we are a freedom-loving people, committed to the defense of liberty wherever it is in jeopardy."  

I have been pondering this week about what can I do in these situations?  How can I fight for freedom for my family and for those who cannot fight for themselves and I was just stumped.  President Hinckley answered some of these questions for me later in the talk he said, "Even in an evil world we can so live our lives as to merit the protecting care of our Father in Heaven. We can be as the righteous living among the evils of Sodom and Gomorrah. Abraham pleaded that these cities might be spared for the sake of the righteous. (See Gen. 18:20–32.) And, above all, we can cultivate in our own hearts, and proclaim to the world, the salvation of the Lord Jesus Christ. Through His atoning sacrifice we are certain life will continue beyond the veil of death. We can teach that gospel which will lead to the exaltation of the obedient."

I have been so impressed by Moroni.  His decision to lead the armies of the Nephites and to seek to protect those that needed it really resonated with me this week. The world is very different now so I don't have the option to tear my cloak and form up an army so I need to find a way to be like Moroni that will meet our current laws. The thing that is great about Moroni is that he was more than just an army captain, there were many other things that he did that I can actually be putting into practice right now. 

First, Moroni sought out guidance from the prophet.  He sent men to ask Alma where the Lamanites would go.  I can seek guidance from our prophet. There are many times that this is where people stray, they forget that we have direct guidance from the mouth of the Lord. 

In chapter 46 verse 16 And therefore, at this time, Moroni prayed that the cause of the Christians, and the freedom of the land might be favored. This is something that I can definitely be putting into practice and start exercising some faith that as Moroni said in verse 18 "Surely God shall not suffer that we, who are despised because we take upon us the name of Christ, shall be trodden down and destroyed, until we bring it upon us by our own transgressions." I will keep in mind that although we, as Christians may face persecution we are on the right side and I need to find peace in that. 

One last thing I will talk about with Moroni, he inspired men.  He reminded them of their cause and to exercise faith. I may not have the magnetism that Moroni had, but I can learn to speak up. I can speak truth and I can educate myself so that I can be sure that I am speaking correct truth. 

In all of this I think that I have come to the conclusion, that I may not understand why everything is happening in the world today, but I can remember that Heavenly Father is in charge and as we learned last week if we are righteous all things will be restored. In the end everything will be made just.
